Give Your Car a Day Off

Clark Howard, Scott Slade and Captain Herb from News/Talk 750 WSB along with The Clean Air Campaign want you to Give Your Car a Day Off!

Coming in early June on the WSB Radio website, you will be able to pledge to Give Your Car a Day Off for one day during the week of June 18th. Clark Howard will be asking you to try carpooling, riding transit, teleworking, biking or walking to get to work and leave your car at home.

        Stay tuned for specific details.

        Smog Season
        SmogAlert

The 2006 smog season was the worst in years. This year with drought gripping much of Georgia it is expected to be much worse. May 1st was the unofficial start of pollution season. Already unhealthy conditions have emerged for some Metro Atlantans.

Last year, the air was unhealthy to breathe for 30 days -- in 1999, there were 69 smog alert days.

The pollution and ozone levels peak between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. It is between those times that the EPA advises people to avoid fueling and outdoor activities.

        Successful Walk Challenge07

Walk There! Challenge 07 has come to a close. Congratulations to all of our winners and participants. Our commuters from CobbRides logged in 20,216, 891 steps - over 10,000 miles!

The grand prize weekend getaway to Callaway Gardens was awarded to Angelia Carithers- Matthews of Kennesaw State University. Angelia, who logged an amazing 706,098 steps, is pictured with Outreach Coordinator, Sue Short.

Angelia stated she started a new healthy lifestyle earlier this year by walking in the evenings with a friend. They increased the time, distance and frequency of their walks and walk no less than five days per week. In March her employer began a new springtime health challenge and Angelia immediately signed up.

When Angelia heard about our Challenge she decided to do something good for the environment while continuing her new healthy lifestyle. One of the many changes Angelia made was giving her car a rest in order to walk the two mile plus round trip commute to the bank each Saturday.

Congratulations again, Angelia, for a great Walk There! Challenge.

Weekly iPod Shuffle winners were Loraine Hames of Aaron Rents, Glenda Godowns of HCC Life, Rose Marie Poggio of Heidelberg, Cheryl Turner of Kemira, Judy Southworth of KSU, Louise Venne of MACTEC Engineering, Kiran Singh of TSYS, and Meg Crawford of Schneider Electric (Square D Company).

        Good job, all!

        Warm Weather Winnings

Earn a Dicks Sporting Goods gift card just for walking! Walk to work just 8 times over the months of June and July and earn a $25 gift card.

If you are not already registered with CobbRides now is the time. Once registered, all you have to do is log your walking commute eight times to receive your gift card.

        Extend your weekend?

State officials are considering offering a tax credit for employers who allow their employees to have alternative work schedules as a means to reduce traffic. Two top lawmakers - Earl Ehrhart of Powder Springs and Vance Smith of Pine Mountain - would like employers to consider having their employees come in just four days a week or nine days every two weeks - also called flexible or compressed work weeks.

        March basket winner

Congratulations to Linda Monk of Invista! Linda was the random winner of the March basket of goodies.

Bring a friend or co-worker to register during a CobbRides display and you will be automatically entered in the drawing. Drawings are held several times a year so it is easy to win!

More than the gas in your tank
        dollarsign

As gas prices rise steadily, many commuters are starting to feel the pinch in their wallets with each fill up. The annual study by the American Automobile Association on driving costs shows it is much more than just the price you pay at the pump, especially for those driving alone.

      • Average of 52.2 cents per mile to own and operate a new car in 2007, basically unchanged from a year ago.
      • Average metro Atlanta commuter travels 28.8 miles each workday, costing more than $15, or greater than $330 a month!
      • Commuters can save more than $1,000 a year by carpooling or riding transit. In fact, a carpooler pays as little as 33.7 cents per mile, or $214 a month.

Vanpool members with CobbRides pay only $50 per month, riding in the HOV lane and arriving to work relaxed and refreshed.
